Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said training AI could one day cost $100 billion. Amodei told CNBC that he isn't worried about the commoditization of large language AI models. Amodei told CNBC that current models already cost a company $100 million to develop — and that price will only increase as the technology advances. "I think we're going to see models trained in the next year are going to be about $1 billion," Amodei told the outlet. Amodei said some AI models may specialize in topics like law or national security, while others could gain expertise in biochemistry.

The generative artificial intelligence startup is the company behind Claude, one of the chatbots that, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google 's Gemini, has exploded in popularity in the past year. Anthropic's first iOS app is free for users across all plans and also available starting Wednesday. In a release Wednesday, Anthropic confirmed that other current clients using Claude include Pfizer, Asana, Zoom, Perplexity AI, Bridgewater Associates and more currently. Now, it's one of the hottest AI startups, with a product that directly competes with ChatGPT in both the enterprise and consumer worlds. Anthropic's stance on the military use of Claude is similar to OpenAI's updated policy.

Cerebral Valley New York will be Newcomer's first east coast event. AdvertisementThe Cerebral Valley AI Summit, the generative AI conference created by tech journalist Eric Newcomer and AI startup Volley, will be hosting its first New York event on June 27th. The original Cerebral Valley Summit, held in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco in 2023, made headlines for producing one of the largest generative AI acquisitions ever and effectively firing the starting gun on the AI arms race. At the last Cerebral Valley Summit in November, 2023, it was a given that OpenAI had already won the AI battle. At the very first Cerebral Valley AI Summit, Newcomer half-jokingly challenged someone to raise $100 million at the conference.

Earlier this week, Amazon said it'd commit a further $2.75 billion to the San Francisco-based company as part of its efforts to get ahead of other Big Tech competitors in the AI arms race. AdvertisementSo, what's the deal behind the company Amazon is betting billions on? Related storiesDuring its early days, Anthropic focused on research, training, and testing efforts to ensure its AI model acted in a way that aligned with human values. Since the initial launch, Anthropic has released a slate of new AI models. Moving forward, Anthropic plans to release more updates to its Claude 3 model family and make its AI more suitable for companies.

The companies announced an initial $1.25 billion investment in September, and said at the time that Amazon would invest up to $4 billion. The deal was struck at the AI startup's last valuation, which was $18.4 billion, according to a source. Over the past year, Anthropic closed five different funding deals worth about $7.3 billion — and with the new Amazon investment, the total exceeds $10 billion. News of the Amazon investment comes weeks after Anthropic debuted Claude 3, its newest suite of AI models that it says are its fastest and most powerful yet. But multimodality, and increasingly complex AI models, also lead to more potential risks.

This time last year, Anthropic was seen as a promising generative AI startup founded by ex-OpenAI research executives. "In our quest to have a highly harmless model, Claude 2 would sometimes over-refuse," Amodei told CNBC. Multimodality, or adding options like photo and video capabilities to generative AI, whether uploading them yourself or creating them using an AI model, has quickly become one of the industry's hottest use cases. But multimodality, and increasingly complex AI models, also lead to more potential risks. "Of course no model is perfect, and I think that's a very important thing to say upfront," Amodei told CNBC.

Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, and Sam McCandlish, cofounders of AnthropicAnthropic's Dario Amodei, Jack Clark, and Daniela Amodei. Since then, the company has received billions in funding from both Google and Amazon in what some have termed an "AI arms race." CEO Dario Amodei, a former Google Brain researcher with a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience, has been writing about the cataclysmic potential of AI since 2016. Constitutional AI is partly the brainchild of two other OpenAI alums and Anthropic cofounders, Tom Brown and Jared Kaplan. Both Kaplan and Brown have worked on Anthropic's efforts to "red team" the company's flagship language model, Claude, probing for misuse possibilities.

Google agreed to invest up to $2 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup founded by ex-OpenAI executives, CNBC has confirmed. The commitment involves a $500 million upfront cash infusion and an additional $1.5 billion to be invested over time, an Anthropic spokesperson told CNBC. That same month, Anthropic was one of four companies invited to a meeting at the White House to discuss responsible AI development with Vice President Kamala Harris. Anthropic was founded by Dario Amodei, OpenAI's former vice president of research, and his sister, Daniela Amodei, who was OpenAI's vice president of safety and policy. "The landscape is just very wide, and there's really quite a lot of room for many different users and types of users to make use of these systems."

Universal Music has sued artificial intelligence startup Anthropic over "systematic and widespread infringement of their copyrighted song lyrics," per a filing Wednesday in a Tennessee federal court. One example from the lawsuit: When a user asks Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude about the lyrics to the song "Roar" by Katy Perry, it generates an "almost identical copy of those lyrics," violating the rights of Concord, the copyright owner, per the filing. The lawsuit also named Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" as an example of Anthropic's alleged copyright infringement, as Universal owns the rights to its lyrics. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research executives and funded by companies including Google , Salesforce and Zoom. "We have been focused on businesses, on making Claude as robustly safe as possible," Daniela Amodei, co-founder and president of Anthropic, told CNBC in a July interview.

Cerebral Valley, an AI conference run by Eric Newcomer's eponymous publication, just announced its second gathering of 2023. CVAI2 (Cerebral Valley AI Summit version 2.0) will take place on November 15 at the SFJAZZ Center in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. The neighborhood is nicknamed Cerebral Valley these days, due to the plethora of AI startups that have sprouted there. As Microsoft -backed OpenAI and Google race to develop the most advanced chatbots, powered by generative artificial intelligence, Anthropic is investing heavily to keep up. Just a few months after raising $750 million over two financing rounds, the startup is debuting a new AI chatbot: Claude 2. "We have been focused on businesses, on making Claude as robustly safe as possible," said Daniela Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic with her brother, Dario. Claude 2 will initially only be available to users in the U.S. and U.K., and Anthropic plans to expand availability in the coming months. Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the public late last year, the tech world has invested heavily in the potential of generative AI chatbots, which respond to text prompts with sophisticated and conversational replies.

Amodei chatted with Insider about her approach to trust and safety and what the future holds for AI. However, the majority of Anthropic cofounder and president Daniela Amodei's career has been spent trying to prove the opposite: that trust and safety is a feature, not a bug. "It's an organizational structure question, but it's also a mindset question," she told Insider. In 2020, Amodei and six other OpenAI employees, including her brother Dario Amodei, left the company to start rival AI lab Anthropic. Throughout Anthropic's growth, the company has kept an interdisciplinary culture, with employees whose experiences range from physics to computational biology to policywriting, Amodei told Insider.
March 14 (Reuters) - Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company backed by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), on Tuesday released a large language model that competes directly with offerings from Microsoft Corp-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Large language models are algorithms that are taught to generate text by feeding them human-written training text. Anthropic has taken a different approach, giving Claude a set of principles at the time the model is "trained" with vast amounts of text data. Rather than trying to avoid potentially dangerous topics, Claude is designed to explain its objections, based on its principles. That's one of the reasons we liked Anthropic," Richard Robinson, chief executive of Robin AI, a London-based startup that uses AI to analyze legal contracts that Anthropic granted early access to Claude, told Reuters in an interview.
